With regret, we have to inform you that the 2021 World Sudoku & Puzzle Championships scheduled for Shanghai, China, in October have been postponed.
This news probably doesn't come as a surprise. China isn't allowing foreign visitors now, and the prospects for international travel this fall are unclear besides.
This Sunday, April 11, from 14:00 to 15:30 (GMT), the World Puzzle Federation will hold a General Assembly via Zoom to discuss this and other matters. If you are available, please join us (contact us via demiger@worldpuzzle.org if you are interested and did not receive an invitation with a link).
The meeting‘s agenda:
Shanghai WSC/WPC
Haijun Zhang and our 2021 Chinese hosts propose postponing the Shanghai championships to 2023 when international travel to China is likely to be open and smooth again.
2022 Championships
While the U.S./Canadian offer for a 2022 WSC/WPC in Toronto still stands, Will Shortz proposes postponing it as well. There were and will be no in-person WSC/WPCs in 2020 and 2021. If the 2022 and 2023 championships were held in Canada and China, respectively, that would mean a five-year gap between championships in Europe - despite the fact that a majority of WPF members are European. If any WPF member in Europe would be willing to host a WSC/WPC next year - or provide even a tentative expression of interest - we would like to hear.
Virtual 2021 WPF Event
It has been proposed to hold a virtual WPF event this autumn. This would include sudoku and puzzle contests as well as talks, presentations, and other features. If we do this, what elements would members like to see? How long should the event last? And who would be willing to help organize it?
Miscellaneous
The meeting will also include other miscellaneous matters. Please let us know in advance if there is something you'd like to discuss.
Note: This General Assembly is for discussion only. Email voting will be done later.
Hope to see you at the meeting!
